The Creators Project NYC Launch

The Creators Project NYC Launch: From Cool Hunting

IMG_8148web.jpg

Kicking off their new mega-initiative celebrating creativity called The Creators Project, Vice and Intel drew out the masses for a day-long series of performances, installations and events at Milk Studios in NYC this past Saturday. As to be expected from such an ambitious project, the line-up had its lows and highs, with the packed NYC debut of Die Antwoord topping the list. While the musical acts like The Rapture, Gang Gang Dance, Neon Indian and MNDR were the biggest draw for most, we documented some of our favorite art—from interactive light sculptures to motion-sensing video and sound pieces—below.

Muti Randolph: Deep Screen
Brazilian architect Muti Randolph's work, often considered more art installation than building, blends elements of both in his mesmerizing interactive sculpture. Randolph (who's also behind other immersive projects, like the façade of Melissa's São Paulo flagship) constructed an imposing 3D video display, consisting of 6,144 hanging orbs of light with a central walkway allowing people to move through it, which then triggers a series of eight pre-programmed animations and sound. Check out our short video of shifting colors and patterns above, shot by
Seth Brau and edited by
Aaron Kohn

United Visual Artists: Tryptich
The group behind Massive Attack's stunning light-based visuals brought a little of the magic to NYC with a series of three screens playing abstract videos and accompanied by ominous tonal sound.

Messhoff Video Games

Mark Essen, a 2008 graduate from Bard college, originally planned to refurbish old bikes with his friends and re-sell them to turn a quick profit after school. Instead, he ended up creating several simple 8-bit video games, further bridging the gap between gaming and art. By mixing avant-garde ideas with surprisingly pleasing simple images, Essen will make you look at your old Super Nintendo in a completely different way.

Fast Lane | Volkswagen

Fast Lane | Volkswagen: from Computerlove

Volkswagen sure does a great job when it comes to viral marketing. The concept behind the campaign is
'Fast Lane, Dedicated to everyone who enjoys speeding life up a little.'

To accomplish this, they built a slide into an subway station in Berlin, transformed a boring elevator into a space rocket and my favorite, attaching a skateboard to a shopping cart trolley.

Musician Jeff Mills' latest release is a hybrid CD + 5' vinyl record on the same hunk of matter. I'd love to see a video of it in action or at least a view from the side so that I may begin to guess what it must be like to use it!

Radially expanding and contracting table

Radially expanding and contracting table: from MAKE Magazine
transforming_table.jpg

These tables from British furniture designer David Fletcher are made on commission for wealthy clients who, apparently, mostly want to install them in their yachts. Each table reportedly cost tens of thousands of pounds. Both manually- and servomechanically-actuated versions (upper and lower videos, respectively) have been made. Without meaning to take anything away from the craftsmanship that is evident in Mr. Fletcher's work, I'd be surprised if this design couldn't be reverse-engineered and produced, perhaps in a smaller version using a CNC mill, at a non jet-setter price.

Some observations: The table top pieces are only truly circular in their larger arrangement. In the 'contracted' table, the 6 wedges in fact form a kind of rounded-off hexagon, and the outer table edge is made circular by the rotating rim, which has a complementary inner profile. Besides the wedges, there are two other types of pieces that make up the table top--6 'darts' having two parallel sides that rise to fill the spaces between the wedges, and the 'star' (a dodecagram, in fact) that rises up in the middle. The table is locked in either configuration by one or more threaded detents which are quite clearly shown in the upper video.

So the geometry of the dissection is straightforward enough. The real challenge would be to remake the mechanics on a budget.
