The Bloody Beetroots feat. Dennis Lyxzén (Refused) – Church of Noise

The Bloody Beetroots feat. Dennis Lyxzén (Refused) – Church of Noise:

The Bloody Beetroots versus Dennis Lyxzén (Refused, The International Noise Conspiracy, etc) – what sounds like an epic collaboration at first sadly turns out to be a cheesy Digitalism clone with hardcore punk vocals. This is the new shit? Hopefully not.

The Bloody Beetroots – Church of Noise (feat. Dennis Lxyzén)

Not even the pathetic video really makes up for four minutes and two seconds of music that would’ve been cool two years ago. At best, this song will be added to my personal list of tracks that have sounds in it that resemble certain notification sounds – as in that particular case, the sound of a BlackBerry receiving a new text.

Identity Festival – Albuquerque, NM Recap

Identity Festival – Albuquerque, NM Recap:re-blog from Chemical Jump

Any big artist coming to my corner of the world in Albuquerque is a very rare treat, but having a whole electronic music festival a 20 minute drive from my house was nothing short of amazing. Read on for my full recap!

(Click the pictures for a larger view)

The day started out pretty well with The Eye getting everyone ready for the day. He was a bit rough in the mixing department, although he was the only one to use Serato with 1200s instead of CDJs, so I can forgive him for a few slip-ups. I was about ready to head to another stage when about half way through his set I got a nice little surprise in the form of a track he dropped by my good friends, No Body. After that I knew I had to stay for his whole set.
No Body – We Speak American (Original Mix) (320 kbps)
I made my way over to the main stage next to catch a little bit of Afrobeta, Jessie and The Toy Boys, and Booka Shade who were all more phenomenal than I expected. Plus, Jessie was looking awfully smoking hot in her outfit.

Next up back over on the Dim Mak stage was Le Castle Vania. I actually ran into him about an hour before his set and introduced myself briefly. It seemed like he was on a mission to go somewhere or do something since I got a wild deer in the headlights look like he’d never heard of Chemical Jump. When I tweeted him about it later he said he definitely had, so I guess I just caught him at a weird time.

Anyway, his set was just as I expected it would be. He played a few new tracks of his which went over really well with the crowd. Though as with every unreleased track the crowd didn’t start jumping up and down until about a second after the drop. Always fun to watch. I’m hoping more people noticed than just me, but him and The Eye both played one of my favorite Darth & Vader remixes.
Freefire – Dataloss (Darth & Vader Remix) (320 kbps)

Holy Ghost was up next on the Dim Mak stage. At this point I just wanna note that I headed over to the Rockstar Energy drink tent and loaded up on about 6 cans, so I was completely wired and wide eyed for their whole performance.

I’m not too familiar with Holy Ghost tracks sad to say, but I did recognize he first single off their debut release and huge crowd pleaser, Do It Again. I’m always on the fence about live bands. When I hear a track on the album I want to hear that track exactly the same way live. I noticed a bit of improv in their set, but other than that they stuck with the tracks to the T and it was more than enjoyable time.
Holy Ghost – Do It Again (320 kbps)

Rusko was definitely one of the most fun at the festival to watch and listen to. Dubstep is very much a second genre for me, so to listen to someone who truly knows how to play and producer it well is a real treat. His signature mohawk was cut a bit short but that didn’t stop him for bobbing to the wobble and throwing down so many good tracks I’d never heard before. And of course he played one of his better known tracks, Da Cali Anthem.
Rusko – Da Cali Anthem (320 kbps)

A bit before the end of Rusko’s set I went back over to the Dim Mak stage (really the best place to be at the festival) to catch a bit of Nero. Blown the fuck away is all I really need to tell you about that show. Enough though only Joe Ray came out to play, it was hands down the best act of the day. I talked with a friend of mine who said Nero was a bit of a train wreak at HARD summer, so I was thankfully I got to see a good show. He even mixed in beautifully the original Chop Suey by System Of A Down for his closer.
Notable tracks played:
Doctor P – Tetris (320 kbps)
SebastiAn – C.T.F.O. (Feat. M.I.A.) (Nero Remix) (256 kbps)

Steve Aoki. What can I really say about Steve? He’s an amazing entertainer and He played a ton of unreleased tracks.. That’s about it. Though seriously, he played 3 new unreleased tracks by himself, probably collaborated with other artists (one was a Weezer collab confirmed by himself over the mic) and at least a couple more future Dim Mak releases. He had the longest timeslot of the day on the Dim Mak stage at an hour and a half, so as usual he played nearly every track out to the full length before mixing out. I’m not hating on him for it, but personally it just annoys me when a song is played for more than 2 minutes. I’ve got serious music ADD, I know.

Later he got out his signature inflatable raft out to do a bit of crowd surfing and brought out a bottle of champagne to spray over the front row of the crowd.

Kaskade was another one of the best acts of the night. Opening up with his latest single Eyes sold me on the performance. House music has been growing on me this past year and seeing Kaskade play some of my favorite tracks at an incredibly loud volume with the bass thumping was incredible. Turning to my side and seeing the girl singing look at me and sing Laidback Luke’s remix of Cinema along with me made my night.

Benny Benassi feat. Gary Go – Cinema (Laidback Luke Remix) (320 kbps)
Kaskade ft Mindy Gledhill – Eyes (Extended Mix) (320 kbps)

Even with several acts dropping off (Erol Alkan, Aeroplane, DJ Shadow, LA Riots) and the outrageous $13 beers, overall I’d say Identity was a success for a first year festival. I’m looking forward to attending the festival in the years to come even if it means flying or driving to another state. Let me know who your favorite act of Identity was in the comments!
P.S. I took a lot more pictures than just these! Go over and take a look at all the photos on Chemical Jump’s Facebook Page!

2 of my idol are jammin!

I made a visit down to the QSU, Q-Bert’s Online Scratch University, last weekend, to play around a little bit and explore the possibility of playing a show together. We practiced for about an hour, improvising and cutting it up in a much more relaxed setting than our last rendezvous here at DJTT headquarters. The guys hit record on a camera and the clip above is one of the improv gems that emerged from our session. The drumming in the background is from our resident drum teacher Ryan, who covered timing techniques for us a few months back. Continue reading for photos, one more clip and more info on my controllers in the video.

QSU is hosted at the “Octagon”, Q-Bert’s resident lair perched high on a hill just outside of San Francisco. Ted, QSU’s main man, told us that the Octagon was actually built by Q-bert’s father who is now nearly 85! All that family love certainly pervades the Thud Rumble crew and Q-Bert’s house. He is always very welcoming and super fun to jam with. I only hope to be as respected and experienced as he is in 15 years!

Q was working on a scratch routine over the instrumental for “Look at me now” by Chris brown when I walked in, so he tossed me the mp3, I dropped a few cue points and we cut up the beat a bit.

Thud Rumble also recently uploaded this clip from our first jam out. It’s a cool look at the other material we didn’t originally publish on the blog.

Again, I do want to re-iterate that this was after 3 months of no practice and no prep. It has proved quite challenging to run a international business with 11 employees and somehow find time to continue my personal creative development.  The good news is that Dj TT has been running much more smoothly and I am getting back to what made us great in the first place- developing killer new ideas! and on that note…

NEW MIDI FIGHTER?

Astute viewers will no doubt notice some strange looking midi-fighters in the video. These are two of four new models we will be announcing in the next week. They are replacing our “custom” midi-fighters with four dedicated layouts we have found to be the most popular. Designed to be high performance instruments, all are paired with mappings for specific controllerism use cases and built in robust metal cases that can survive weekly tours and serious abuse.

More info will be forthcoming, but if you want to get the scoop directly, please sign up on ourMidi-Fighter mailing list for the latest info, special deals and new firmware updates.

Cool Gear @ NAMM 2011: Kitara

Cool Gear @ NAMM 2011: Kitara:re-blog from DJtechtools

The Kitara looks very familiar to anyone who has watched the original YouTube video of inventor Michael Zarimis rocking out on very early prototype of the device that is now being mass-produced. MISA Digital Instruments is boldly asserting that the Kitara is the the next major paradigm shift in guitars, and from what we saw at NAMM, we’re prepared to believe them. What’s interesting to DJs is why the Kitara might be a instrument that fits nicely into a DJ set for those looking to put more of a performance in their shows.

The Kitara is controllerism for guitars – everything that the Guitar Hero controllers should have been. While guitars have always had strings, the Kitara doesn’t – instead covering the fretboard with buttons and trading the area reserved for a sound hole or pickups for a multifunction touchscreen that allows the musician to effect the sound of the instrument in a number of ways in a similar feeling of operation as a Korg Kaoss Pad.

Here’s the official tech specifications list:

  • 8-inch multi-touch display
  • MIDI out
  • Audio out (1.25”)
  • Headphone out (3.5mm)
  • Onboard multi-voice audio synthesizer with assignable effects blocks
  • 100+ digital sounds
  • 6 pre-loaded effects
  • 24 frets; 144 notes
  • Linux operating system (yes, it’s really open-source)

If you’ve ever tried to work a electric guitar into a DJ set, you might have found that good results are hard to come by. If the DJ is able to overcome feedback and other technical problems then it becomes challenging to have a guitar tone sit into the mix of modern dance tracks, which tend to be are highly produced and very compressed. We think the Kitara might be a great tool to bring into the clubs for an truly epic performance that sounds nearly as good as it looks. For more information, check the Misa website!

Underworld - Live on TV!

Underworld - Live on TV!:re-blog from The Beatery
I’m supposed to be writing a SYTYCB article but it’s having trouble manifesting itself so in the meantime please enjoy a video of Underworld performing Always Loved a Film live on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon. Their television performances are rare, and it is a neat way to get a well-lit look at their live setup. Not sure why they brought all the guitars and other things. Hopefully they played more than one song and didn’t just set them up for show.

Daft Punk joins Phoenix on stages. ARE THEY BACK?

VIDEO: Daft Punk joins Phoenix on stage, seems totally pointless/lame from Hipsterrunoff

Every now and then, 2 bands will 'collab' on stage just to produce a bloggable meme that every1 has to blog because there is so much brand synergy that u can't 'pass it up', u have to let ur readers know that it was a meaningful experience, and if ur life was meaningful, u would have been there 2 experience it. Just read a bunch of blogs 'flipping their shit' abt Daft Punk joining Phoenix on stage. Watched like 10 minutes of shaky youtube clips trying to ascertain whether or not this was amazing/bloggable, but decided to go ahead and post it so u can have the same empty feeling inside as me.

Check out these entry levelers 'flipping their shit.' H8 collabs of bands on stage where they are clearly just trying to 'meme' and don't really ever unify their sound.

I remember back in the day, before Phoenix was mainstream and Daft Punk wasn't rlly a universal brand, I probably woulda vibed to this. Maybe in like 2k4. But c'mon. It's 2k10. Not gonna get excited about this entry-level mainstream collab going down at Madison Square Garden.

Here is another snuff-esque clip. U don't have to watch it. Really unfulfilling.

Here is some video clip by some guy who is sitting in the last row of the mainstream arena, but still felt inspired 2 capture this moment 4 youtube.

Should Daft Punk join Phoenix?

Do u think these French Indie Wavers are 'taking over America'?

Should America prevent French bands from 'getting too mainstream' and stealing our buzz dollars?

Are French ppl better at music than Americans?

Do they 'get' pop music?

Is Phoenix the most successful indie band in the history of indie?

Do u wish u were at Madison Square Garden to be a part of this epic moment in indie history?

Do u feel insignificant cuz u weren't there?

Do u think they made 'beautiful sounds' or were they 'forcing it' and it ended up making them both sound/look dumb?

Are Phoenix + Daft Punk 4 lamestreamers?

M.I.A. NEW Music Video

M.I.A, Born Free from ROMAIN-GAVRAS on Vimeo.

Probably the most disturbing MV to date!
