South London soul singer Jessie Ware has teamed up with the New York-via-Osaka teenage duo BenZel, comprised of 15-year-old Umi Takahashi and 16-year-old Yoko Watanabe, for a cover of Brownstone’s 1994 R&B hit “If You Love Me”. ArKaos promises to make output to LED surfaces easier. Marco from ArKaos explains what we see here: “[This is the] Kling-Net mapper working with MediaMaster in Simple mode. It sounds like the computer system on a Bird of Prey on Star Trek, but Kling-Net is at the heart of where VJ and media server maker ArKaos – and a lot of the live visual world – is headed. Forget the phrase “projection mapping,” and think “video mapping” and “pixel mapping.” Yes, projectors will still be a big part of live visuals. But they’ll be just one outlet for visual performance, alongside increasingly-sophisticated LED lighting. And LED lighting is increasingly looking like a major choice in installations.
Let me put that in less technical terms: more bright shiny, shiny from the LEDs.
So, LED is amazing technology for visualization. But it can also be amazingly hard to set up. The race now becomes about how to make that technology easier to access. ArKaos’ play is doing just that with Kling-Net. (Kahplah! Sorry, I’ll stop that now.)
It’s not rocket science to do cool stuff like this with pricey media servers sold for expensive applications. But what about the independent visual artists, the experimental creators pushing the envelope? The good news is, ArKaos is bringing the same media server tech back to GrandVJ, an app that’s far more affordable.
Marco Hinic is engine architect and CEO of ArKaos and creator of Kling-Net. (I love that, in this business, the engineers typically run the show.) Marco tells CDM about what their goals are for the tech:

Kling-Net has been designed to create plug and play LED devices and we are converting more and more manufacturers to work with us. There is nothing else like that on the market and we hope it will enable a new level of integration for many users.The other side of the equation, apart from ArKaos’ software, is the lighting fixtures. Recently, ArKaos announced Chauvet is bringing Kling-Net support to their lighting, which you can see in the video and image below.
The good news is that we will also support Kling-Net in GrandVJ. Indeed this why we are late with releasing GrandVJ, while working on the video mapper in MediaMaster we added the functionality where a layer can be sent to a mapping surface and / or to Kling-Net – ArtNet. To support that in GrandVJ we need to rework it’s core engine and that’s what we are doing now… We are now looking forward to present that at NAMM with ADJ. Monokle (aka Vlad, of St. Petersburg) gets a mesmerizing new video for his track “Swan.” It’s the work of Bucharest-born, 23-year-old artist Alina Anca, spinning the glitchy goodness of Monokle’s music into a magical study of pattern and outer space.
Anca’s own work delves into the esoteric and surreal, never without some youthful fancy – the kind of spirit that sets work apart from the mundane. She’s a nice foil to the album artist for this release, Argentinian Carolina Nino.
In fact, with a growing number of young artists exploding into these sorts of releases, I’m eager to see what musical-visual collaborations may emerge, particularly as these same creatives grow.
The music is out this week on Ki-Records.

I keep waiting to write this headline and talk about something that’s shipping. But it might at last happen. We might finally be able to cover an HD mixer that lets you easily plug in two computers and mix as easily as you have done for years with analog inputs. It’s called the HD Rabbit, from upstart Carrot Video, designed by VJs for VJs – and yes, you might even be able to afford it.
You know what you want. You’ve known for a long time. You want a mixer that works in HD, one that handles multiple digital resolutions and multiple outputs, and lets you switch and mix at will. And you want it to work with computer inputs, and control computer software. Basically, you want to have the feeling you had when you used analog, standard-def mixers like Edirol’s classic V4, in something that works with computers running at modern resolutions.
Also, you want it to be something you can actually afford.
Carrot Video today gives us the first look at an HD mixer that might have you pinching yourself to see if you’re dreaming. First, let’s get the bad news out of the way first: this is a prototype, not a complete product, and Carrot tell CDM that they don’t want to suggest that they’re ready for mass production. They’re working on a small test batch. (I’m afraid I just unleashed a lot of requests from our readers to get into that batch. Sorry, guys. Well, you’ll have some good choices.)
But, then there’s the good news. It’s clear from the moment you see the design, with V4-style t-bar, a simple, VJ-friendly layout, and switching features. And then it just gets better from there:
On the other hand, I think the effort to make something integrated is itself admirable, even if the results may not satisfy everyone. It also suggests the technology is ready for mass-marketed, all-in-one products, with this as an excellent prototype of what they might look like.
(We’ll look at DIY options later this week, and explain some of the underlying technology. And I’m sure Carrot will read your feedback.)
Weight: 2.5 kg, fit into a compact 28 cm by 23 cm by 9 cm aluminum metal frame.
What will it cost?
Pricing is not yet announced, but Carrot Video tells CDM readers should look at the pricing of the Edirol V-8. That means we’re somewhere in the viscinity of 2000 USD / EUR. It’s a magical price point that in the past allowed VJs and independent artists, not just big institutions, to first invest in mixing. If Carrot can hit their price target and ship in greater volumes, the design could start that revolution all over again for HD mixing.
What do you get?
Early production information seen by CDM shows the mixer including the scaler – so you don’t have to buy extra hardware. The all-in-one box includes, as well, an RS232 patch cable, and cable/adapters for DVI, VGA, and HDMI.
Who’s behind it?
It’ll come as little surprise that VJs designed this thing. And you may already know the VJs: visualists Merijn Meijers (KBK), Karl Klomp (Molta), and Joris de Jong (Hybrid Visuals) are founders and developers, with Marc Snip (Embed Engineering) doing the hardware work.

Behold the power of sound and image. With people of a certain generation, you can stand in a room, and shout, “One, two, three, four, five…” and likely have them finish your countdown with the song from this animation. It has its own Wikipedia entry. It has music from The Pointer Sisters. It’s been covered by … a lot of people. The segment was the work of San Francisco director Jeff Hale, a psychedelic journey through a wonderland of numbers in the style of pop art-style album covers. (See the full sequence re-edited, since Children’s Television Workshop – now Sesame Workshop – didn’t include it.)
What you may not have seen was the 2010 remake, produced by the Italian animation studio Florence Animation, with music by Beirut’s Perrin Cloutier. It’s a pitch-perfect homage, and demonstrates how, in place of traditional animation techniques, we now have access both to low-fidelity techniques (stop motion, aided by computers and vastly cheaper photography equipment) and new digital motion graphics. Sure, the groovy 70s Sesame Street is gone, but we have all the tools to keep the spirit alive.
Read up on a whole history of this animation – and, perhaps, find other Muppet inspiration for your motion work. Hope you’re having a fine weekend, indeed.

In Madeleine L’Engle’s seminal science fiction novel A Wrinkle in Time, the characters on Camazotz walk in time to a pervasive beat produced by a telepathic brain known as IT. In “LAYERS,” synchronistic pedestrians are perhaps not so sinister. But in a more playful experiment, those figures become part of an audiovisual composition, a kind of beat-sequenced set of sampled walking people moving through volumes of color. The result is that an otherwise ordinary, mundane feature of the landscape becomes aesthetic.
Pedestrians, in other words, need not be pedestrian.

HYBE’s Light Tree: Interactive Dan Flavin re-illuminates the minimalist fluorescent light tubes of Dan Flavin(1933-1996) from the 1960s, through digital technology. Experimenting with light and its effect, Flavin explored artistic meaning in relationships between light, situation, and environment. The readymade fluorescent light fixtures he used created space divided and adjusted by light and composition, offering a newly structured space with light. HYBE’s work expands the logic of Flavin by reinforcing the physical property of light through interactive media. It presents an escape from traditional lighting, as light and color changes when touched by viewers. Lighting here is divided into front and back, and colors are programmed to maintain complementary colors. The front lighting constantly interacts with colors on a back wall through visual contrast and mixture. A random change and diffusion of light with the involvement of viewers provokes tension extending and segmenting space, turning space into a forum for emotional perceptual experience.

Interview With David Lindberg About His Work With Color Grading:
David Lindberg is a colorist from Edsbyn, Sweden. We’ve asked him a few questions about himself and his work with Color Grading. We hope you can pick up a thing or two.
To split my three years into three chapters we can say that the first year was mostly VFX while the second year was spent on cinematography. I wanted to learn as much as I could so that later I could decide what I wanted to do and what was most inspiring to me.
When I started to get many jobs I started to feel in every project that I always longed to when the editing was done so that I could jump into the grading part. When I later thought about it, it was all obvious to me ’cause when I was young I always painted, it was my truly passion. So grading is basically a mix between my two big passions:
(golden rule: you are never better than your latest film)
But I also have films and directors that I find very inspirational. For example I think Zack Snyder (Director of 300, Watchmen, Legend of the Guardians…) is a genius. I love his style and the grading he uses in his films are fantastic. I just saw the trailer for his new super man film, Man of Steel, and the grading in it are so ridiculous good. The blue, unsaturated and low mid toned style is so sad but still interesting.But I’m also very emotional and want to achieve real emotions in my films so I find films like Seven Pounds, One Day and Meet Joe Black very inspirational.
But I also enjoyed working on the music video for Spoiwo – Years of Silence. Even though my hands almost got frostbitten it was challenging and fun to get some slow motion shots around all the snow and trees.
In grading, a lot of people make the mistake by not grading their film because they don’t think they know how to do it. But when I first started grading I didn’t know anything about it. I just added a couple of Curves-effects and tweaked until I found it cool and beautiful. There are no rules on how to do grading, the only things that decides if a grading look good or bad are our eyes and we all have those. So experiment with all the effects you can think of being a good way to achieve something you’ll like, and start tweak and play around and let your eyes be the judges ’cause in the end we don’t know how you achieved the grading, we just see the result.
Then you have the secondary correction which means making keys and masks if there are something you want to lit or darken. Sometimes maybe a wall or a chair is too light or too saturated so that it steals the attention from the actors or the thing you want to focus on, then it’s good to darken or desaturate it so that the eyes doesn’t think it’s so distracting.
Fixing skin tones and eyes are also something you often do in your secondary correction.
Then in the master correction, you want to add your look. Create a look you think is good for the scene, like adding different nuances in the shadows, midtones and highlights. Here’s is also where I add my contrast by deciding how dark or bright the shadows, midtones and highlights should be. This is a very important step though it kind of decides what time it is, were they are and what kind of weather it is.
That was an experiment I made one night after thinking about how to increase the depth in the scene by adding sharpening in different radius values. It was very powerful though the sharpening added some contrasts in the curves of my forehead and cheeks if I used a big radius. And then I just added a few more sharpening effects but with lower radius and that way it took smaller parts of the scene and increased it’s depth. So it was very cool to get that good control over the depth by adjusting the sharpening tools.
The scene I’ve got most question for is the man walking of the wood at 0:31 so let’s go with that one.
What mainly did this to a good shot is that it looks like it’s shot with a really good camera. As you can see in the before, it’s not. But by adding those light rays, bringing everything down to a kind of dark look but still keeping the details in everything, and adding those tiny particles in the air, it looks like the camera did have really high dynamic range and that it was shot in high pixels though it could get those small particles as well. So it is kind of like tricking your eyes. Make it look like the camera was better than it actually was.
How I did those sun rays is also a question I get a lot. I used a great plugin Red Giant called Trapcode Shine. I tracked the trees in AE and added the information to a Null object and pointed my layer with Trapcode Shine so that I could have the rays kept in one place even though my camera was moving.
Interview With David Lindberg About His Work With Color Grading:
David Lindberg is a colorist from Edsbyn, Sweden. We’ve asked him a few questions about himself and his work with Color Grading. We hope you can pick up a thing or two.
For those who don’t know, could you explain a little about what your job title is and what you do?
I’m a colorist and I’m grading films, commercials and music videos, but I also love working with cinematography and editing so that’s also something I do in certain projects.How did you get started in color grading work and when did you decide to specialize in color?
I’ve been working with making films for three years now but it wasn’t until one year ago I decided to specialize in color grading and that I wanted to be a professional colorist.To split my three years into three chapters we can say that the first year was mostly VFX while the second year was spent on cinematography. I wanted to learn as much as I could so that later I could decide what I wanted to do and what was most inspiring to me.
When I started to get many jobs I started to feel in every project that I always longed to when the editing was done so that I could jump into the grading part. When I later thought about it, it was all obvious to me ’cause when I was young I always painted, it was my truly passion. So grading is basically a mix between my two big passions:
Painting + Filmmaking = Painting the films.
Were you completely self taught or did you receive any formal training?
I was going in a high school with football and computer as my orientation so I did never take any classes in grading, vfx or cinematography. So to you guys who wants to give up your filmmaking dreams because you don’t have the money for a film school, that is NOT important. If you are motivated and ambitious you will find exactly anything you’ll ever need on the internet. Even though I was in high school I was sitting up at nights at Google searching for information and watching tutorials, lectures, pod casts, and online classes. Once again, you do NOT need a school if you have access to a library or internet.I’ve been meeting two of the largest post houses in Sweden these past weeks to discuss an employment and the absolutely last thing they cared about when meeting me was which school I had gone to. The only thing they care about is how good my latest film is.(golden rule: you are never better than your latest film)
What/Who inspires you?
Music and life inspires me. When sitting on the bus or the car, I never just sit and watch my phone, instead I look at the nature, the people, the buildings and the sky and automatically I get inspiration from those sights. But what I find absolutely most satisfying is sunsets and sunrises. The color of the sun when it has that burning orange or magical red is unbeatable. I can sit and watch it for hours, just noticing how the trees, buildings and sea is affected by the low angled warm light. That inspires me.But I also have films and directors that I find very inspirational. For example I think Zack Snyder (Director of 300, Watchmen, Legend of the Guardians…) is a genius. I love his style and the grading he uses in his films are fantastic. I just saw the trailer for his new super man film, Man of Steel, and the grading in it are so ridiculous good. The blue, unsaturated and low mid toned style is so sad but still interesting.But I’m also very emotional and want to achieve real emotions in my films so I find films like Seven Pounds, One Day and Meet Joe Black very inspirational.
What project or job have you had the most fun working on?
I think it’s the project I’m working on right now. It’s a short film for a company in NYC called The Jacks Firm. I’m doing the editing and the grading and I think it’s a really challenging project with some very cool shots and interesting grading.But I also enjoyed working on the music video for Spoiwo – Years of Silence. Even though my hands almost got frostbitten it was challenging and fun to get some slow motion shots around all the snow and trees.
Do you prefer color work for motion graphics, or visual effects?
Neither, I think it’s fun to grade visual effects to make it match the scene and look natural but it’s way more fun to get a scene and create a completely new look, fixing the skin, the eyes and change some colors in the trees. When you’re grading a scene instead of VFX or motion graphics, you get to be a little bit more creative.Do you use AE for color grading? If no, what do you use? If yes, what plug-ins do you use the most?
I am mainly working in DaVinci Resolve which is a great grading software, but I have worked a lot in AE and Premiere as well. I prefer the RGB curves in AE and Premiere than the curves in DaVinci but still DaVinci has some better features with keys, masking and tracking. When I worked in AE and Premiere I always used Magic Bullet Colorista 2 which is a great plugin. It gives you control over shadows, midtones and highlights and you can make keys for the skin as well, even though it’s not as good as in DaVinci.What other options do you wish were available in AE?
First of all, vectroscopes, histogram, waveform and RGB parades! I don’t understand why they don’t make that easy to use in AE. I think you can get it by getting some plugin but it shouldn’t be so complicated though it’s very useful when grading and fixing scenes.Then I think it should be better ways of doing keys if you would want to isolate specific areas in your scene. But then again, AE is not built for being a grading app, but still.Do you have favorite before/after clip work you’ve worked on?
I really haven’t uploaded any good before and after videos to show my breakdown though I always get new jobs and projects that I think, I want to include this in the breakdown, but then I get another job which I also want to add in the breakdown and that way I never get time to do a real before and after video but I liked the vintage look I created a few weeks ago which I made a before and after video of:Do you tend to default warmer or cooler colors? Why?
It all depends on the scene and what mood you want to achieve. If you want to create a happy mood in a scene when it is suppose to be hot and sunny, it’s not a good idea to make it bluish and cold. But if I had to choose one I think I find cooler looks more interesting and beautiful.Where do you hope to be in 10 years time?
Good question. I hope to become one of the best colorists in the world, but I also love telling stories and affect people with my films so it’s not impossible that I’m directing films. I got too many film ideas that I want to make and I want at least one of them to become a real film.What is the most common/annoying mistake you see made in people’s work?
I think it is people who are just making films based on other ideas. The only way to become successful and make your film being spread over the internet is by making something new and interesting that when a guy sees it he thinks, wow I must show this to my friend. That’s the only way your work can be spread and become popular and famous. So instead of watching films on the internet and recreate them, think of something new that can make people look at your film and think, oh I wish I was the one who came up with that idea.In grading, a lot of people make the mistake by not grading their film because they don’t think they know how to do it. But when I first started grading I didn’t know anything about it. I just added a couple of Curves-effects and tweaked until I found it cool and beautiful. There are no rules on how to do grading, the only things that decides if a grading look good or bad are our eyes and we all have those. So experiment with all the effects you can think of being a good way to achieve something you’ll like, and start tweak and play around and let your eyes be the judges ’cause in the end we don’t know how you achieved the grading, we just see the result.
What advice would you have for someone asking for basic color grading principles to follow?
First of all, make a primary correction which means fix your scene so that it looks natural and clean.First of all, make a primary correction which means fix your scene so that it looks natural and clean. It is basically getting your scene correctly balanced, but some also do their contrast in the primary so that the highlights are completely white and the blacks are completely black (a good way of getting this right is looking at a waveform), but I use to do this when I’m creating my overall look.
Then you have the secondary correction which means making keys and masks if there are something you want to lit or darken. Sometimes maybe a wall or a chair is too light or too saturated so that it steals the attention from the actors or the thing you want to focus on, then it’s good to darken or desaturate it so that the eyes doesn’t think it’s so distracting.
Fixing skin tones and eyes are also something you often do in your secondary correction.
Then in the master correction, you want to add your look. Create a look you think is good for the scene, like adding different nuances in the shadows, midtones and highlights. Here’s is also where I add my contrast by deciding how dark or bright the shadows, midtones and highlights should be. This is a very important step though it kind of decides what time it is, were they are and what kind of weather it is.
Talk to me about your Unsharp Mask experiment.
What program or plug-in have you really wanted to learn that you just haven’t been able to to?
There is no such thing though you can learn anything you want on the internet. But then, some softwares are way harder to get than others and it takes more time but if you are willing to spend that time, you will learn after sitting those hours of watching tutorials. But for example, it takes longer time to learn Maya or 3ds Max than understanding Colorista 2 for AE. But if you want to learn and are willing to spend time on learning it, you can’t fail.Can you briefly walk through any of the shots in your T2i Color Grading project?
What mainly did this to a good shot is that it looks like it’s shot with a really good camera. As you can see in the before, it’s not. But by adding those light rays, bringing everything down to a kind of dark look but still keeping the details in everything, and adding those tiny particles in the air, it looks like the camera did have really high dynamic range and that it was shot in high pixels though it could get those small particles as well. So it is kind of like tricking your eyes. Make it look like the camera was better than it actually was.
Anything else that you’d like to share with our readers?
My career developed very fast and I’m very lucky to have got that much luck by having the right people accidentally watching my films on internet and then later got contacted by them. I also got a mail from a company in Hollywood a few months ago while I was still in high school and they asked if I wanted to fly there and work for them for three weeks, that was really inspiring and I learned a lot! So when I talked to a person who is kind of my mentor, I said to him that most of my success has been by luck, but then he said:Yes you have got some luck but then again you’ve earned that luck after all those hours of watching tutorials and classes at nights. You wouldn’t have got that luck if you hadn’t worked hard and put a lot of videos and tests on the internet, luck is never free.So work hard if it is something you want, because sooner or later you’ll get it back in some way.

Julia Pott: Belly

Julia Pott (Hornet) is one of those rarities: an animation director with a unique voice who can actually make you feel something. The common denominator in her work is an intense yearning — an often funny and sometimes painful search for something intimate and real. Whether the subject is love or loss, Julia’s work feels like a confession from a best friend whispered from somewhere inside a massive pillow fort you’ve constructed together during a summer weekend.
After a long and successful run on the festival circuit, including stops at Sundance, Animafest Zagreb, SXSW, the Holland Animation Film Festival and the Hiroshima International Animation Festival (among many others), Julia’s animated short “Belly” has been released on the web.
Created for her thesis at the Royal College of Art, “Belly” is a touching animated short rendered in Julia’s disarming illustration style. Its cast of animal characters are poignantly human, delivering understated dialogue during a surreal rescue mission with a heart-wrenching conclusion.
We caught up with Julia for a little Q&A and a glimpse at the process behind “Belly.”
Who are you and what do you do?

For me, the film seems to collapse the mental division between childhood and adulthood. You’ve presented some themes that are universal, regardless of age: love, rejection, companionship, loss. Is all this just me looking too deeply into the film or were you aiming to hit some of those ideas?

Who are you and what do you do?
I’m Julia Pott and I’m a British animation director living in Brooklyn.Where did the idea for “Belly” come from?
The starting point for “Belly” centred around the cross-over period between going to sleep in back of the car at night, then seamlessly waking up in my bed the next morning. Then I got too old and heavy and was woken up by my parents, forced to trudge upstairs, brush my teeth and put myself to bed. I remember being acutely aware that I had had things pretty good for a while, and now it was over.
Growing up with a sister five years older then me, I spent a large period of my childhood feeling generally hard done by, ostracized and left out. I was so desperate to speed through the process of being a kid that I didn’t stop to appreciate what I would be leaving behind. Once it’s been given up, it’s gone. You can remember the sensation, you can feel it in the pit of your stomach, but you cannot get back there – hence the title, “Belly.”
Once I knew I wanted to focus on childhood I indulged myself in the memories of my own. As a kid I think we more willingly immerse ourselves in the uncanny, happy to feel inexplicably weird. We consume horror, gore and casual death. I was absolutely fascinated by the idea of sinking in quicksand, being beheaded, ghosts… As I got older, I grew out of my kid-like immunity to the spooky – not so ready to feel scared, not wanting to feel it at all, in fact.
The laws of physics are also much more ambiguous. It seems feasible to walk through walls, push your hands through your skin. In this way animation became the perfect medium for the subject matter – using the physics of childhood to externalise the inner turmoil of the characters – melting into the ground when you’re yelled at, pushing through your friend’s body if it’s a quickest way to get down.
Summer became the natural setting for the film because of this sense of possibility that comes with the season. So much of my childhood memories centre on the heat of summer, playing in the ocean and feeling like you might almost drown when a wave crashes over you, and going back for more anyway.
Character Development

No, this is absolutely the crux of the film. You can feel these sensations at any age. There is a line in, ‘The Hotel New Hampshire’ by Jon Irving that says: “You spend half your life being 15.”Style frames
So far, I show no signs of outgrowing 15. I can be in an awkward social situation, and I am a kid again, wanting to bury myself in the floor. A relationship can end, and it joins your childhood memories in your belly – another period of your life that you remember, even yearn for, but can never return to.

Inspiration for the visuals and the subject matter went hand in hand. I went back to the shows from my childhood, re-watching 90’s kid’s TV like Eerie Indiana, Round the Twist and Goosebumps but also coming of age films that fell into this specific genre of loss, horror and humor: Harold and Maude, The Goonies, Twin Peaks, Stand by Me.How long did you work on the project?
The film that resonated with me the most during my narrative and aesthetic development was E.T., with the two protagonists becoming so emotionally connected that when one becomes ill, they both deteriorate together. On the aesthetic side, endearing otherworldly creatures appealed to me – E.T., Gizmo from Gremlins – not real creatures and yet we feel this emotional warmth for them. They tapped into this spooky, childlike style I was trying to achieve.
With live action as such a heavy frame of reference I was compelled to incorporate it into the film, but not so much as it would overwhelm the visuals – it become a subtle addition – like moving collage.
The 2D animation aesthetic drew on this genre of 90’s coming of age film’s but also looked at animations that revelled in the medium – Silly Symphonies, the Fleischer Brothers, Estonian animation that embraced squash and stretch, playing with the line and taking something to its most ridiculous conclusion.
It was my thesis film from the Royal College of Art so production spanned from the end of October to June, so about 8 months. I spent three to four months developing the script and characters, and the end of January onwards was spent on production. It was my first completely original script, so a large majority of the first three months was spent berating my own writing abilities and cursing myself for thinking it wouldn’t be that hard to write a script from scratch.Motion test
How did you pick the rest of your team?
Sound was incredibly important to the film. Dave Prosser had graduated the year before me and his film “Matter Fisher” had brilliant sound. I worked with his sound designer Joseph Tate from the beginning– geeking out over the best sound for ripping off limbs and sliding through bodies. (I believe Joe spent a lot of time standing in large vats of porridge to achieve the sensation.)What’s your favorite moment? Why?
Finding the right voice over artists was a bit of a struggle for me, as I had these perfect imaginary voices ringing in my ears and to find that person wasn’t easy. Each part was auditioned for by 50 or so people, and for a while no one seemed to fit the bill. I lucked out with Oscar, who was played by Livvy, my sister’s… boyfriend’s… niece.
The relationship was mutually beneficial because I’d go round her house to run through the script, and then she’s build a giant wall out of pillows and we’d run into it as hard as we could. She’s bloody brilliant. Cornelius Clarke who plays Oscar’s monster was one of the kindest, gentlest people I’ve met – every line he spoke made me want to weep.
In terms of animation we have first-years from the RCA help us out for a week or so, and I was lucky enough to nab two of the best – Eamonn O’Neill and Ben Cady. I had some extra help from Robin Bushell, one of the members of my old collective, Treat Studios. The boy is an animation genius and can copy my drawing style to the letter.
Being a year since it’s completion, I still find myself in that period where everything about the film seems a little bit rubbish, but the more distance I get from it, the more aspects of it grow on me.What was the most challenging aspect of the project?
I think my favourite plot device of the film was repurposing the eerie sonar of a whale and giving it a new significance. It came to represent so much of what I was trying to say, encapsulating this permanent sense of loss in a literal haunting moan.
At the beginning of the project I foolishly let myself be overrun with this sense of panic that this would be the last time, for a long time, that I would have full control over my own short film. “Belly” became the vessel for tackling every aspect of filmmaking I felt I was weak in.What’s next for you?
I wrote a script from scratch, worked with live action, worked with a cast of actors, animated and composited a film (almost) entirely by myself. With previous films, I had always managed to sideline a lot of these tasks so this time around I didn’t want to shy away from anything. There were moments when I genuinely thought about packing it all in and moving to New York prematurely to avoid how hard it all was. I am, of course, glad I didn’t.
That being said, I think the biggest challenge was making something people might not like. Having worked as an illustrator and animator for a few years, my work had fallen into this genre of romantic love. I was comfortable there and had had relative success in it. I felt tapped out. Having gone back to the genre again and again, I was left going into my second year at the RCA uninspired and exhausted.
When I pushed myself to think harder about what it is I loved about animation and film and generally being a person, I became excited again. Once I knew what I wanted to make and was motivated to research it, play around with it and pull it apart (literally), I didn’t care what anyone would think at the end, I was just relieved to have reignited my love of the medium. So I guess I finally realized the old cliché that the biggest challenge also has the biggest pay off.
I moved to New York last October and signed to the Manhattan-based production company Hornet. It’s the first time in my life I feel like a proper person — possibly because living in New York makes me feel like I’m living in a movie and everything I do should be set to the When Harry Met Sally soundtrack.
I have spent the last year travelling the festival circuit with “Belly,” and the highlights have to be seeing it play at Sundance and SXSW. With all the moving about I have yet to really settle into Brooklyn life, and I am keen to stay put for a while. I am currently finishing up a Random Acts film, which will air in a few months on Channel 4. After that, I want to start writing again, developing a script for TV or film. I’ll be working on my first live action music video in September, potentially with a lot of pastel glitter.

The latest illusions from the White Kanga crew aren’t simply mapping as a novel way of making projection look three-dimensional. They appear to alter the reality around the object itself, playing with our perception’s ability to see animation as something fluid and real.

Up close, nature’s patterns represent nothing so much as elegant geometry, or even, perhaps, pixels. Rendered as an translucent array, organic patterns become a dance of digital pixels in a work in North Carolina. The creators describe it nicely, so it’s best to reflect on their description – and recall that nature can be an endless source of inspiration.
There’s an extra revelation here, too: low-power displays could be the future. And that’s excellent news for nature.

Patterned by Nature was commissioned by the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences for the newly-built Nature Research Center in Raleigh, North Carolina. The exhibit celebrates our abstraction of nature’s infinite complexity into patterns through the scientific process, and through our perceptions. It brings to light the similarity of patterns in our universe, across all scales of space and time.
10 feet wide and 90 feet in length, this sculptural ribbon winds through the five story atrium of the museum and is made of 3600 tiles of LCD glass. It runs on roughly 75 watts, less power than a laptop computer. Animations are created by independently varying the transparency of each piece of glass.
The content cycles through twenty programs, ranging from clouds to rain drops to colonies of bacteria to flocking birds to geese to cuttlefish skin to pulsating black holes. The animations were created through a combination of algorithmic software modeling of natural phenomena and compositing of actual footage.
An eight channel soundtrack accompanies the animations on the ribbon, giving visitors clues to the identity of the pixelated movements. In addition, two screens show high resolution imagery and text revealing the content on the ribbon at any moment.
